Hotel Rooms (2022)

There’s so much light in a hotel room at night. I cross the country every year, usually by car, and sometimes spend over a hundred nights in hotels, often changing towns every night. The rooms are all the same in that there are LEDs everywhere, on everything, and light leaks in from the door, and they still have clock radios with blinding displays and parking lot lights outside the window that no blackout shades can completely obscure.

At some point on one of these trips, as I lay in bed trying to fall asleep, it occurred to me to make images of these rooms and all of their dark luminosity.

I photographed every room (the ones below are just the ones I made prints of) on that seven-week trip, driving all day, photographing all day, and then getting to the room late and, before I could even unpack, spending a half hour or hour making more photographs.
